Medicines worth £1 Million are wasted every year in Kent. And that's money that could be spent on other medicines and NHS services.

Why are medicines wasted?
Once medicines are dispensed but you no longer need them, they cannot be re-used and must be thrown away.

The average cost of one month's supply is £10 per medicine. So, if the prescriptions are for longer than two months, the waste will be higher if treatment changes or is stopped.

What can we do about it?
Most doctors are prescribing medicines for only one or two months at a time - unless they are absolutely sure that you will need them for longer.

This avoids waste when treatment changes or stops.

If you order by post, you can help by ticking the items you need. Please don't leave it blank as we don't know which items you need this can lead to confusion and waste.
Don't be tempted to order extras as a 'stand-by'.
If you feel you don't need a particular medicine any more or have any problems with the medicines you are prescribed tell your doctor or pharmacist. You could be helping prevent waste - but, whatever you do, dont just stop taking them without asking your doctor.
